Holdsclaw Offers WNBA a Powerful New Shot

Holdsclaw honed her game on the courts near her grandmother's apartment, playing against boys for as many as six hours daily. But Chamique's trophies are no more prominently displayed in the apartment than photos of June Holdsclaw's other three grandchildren. Apartment 1-D is not a shrine to Chamique's achievements; it merely gave birth to them. June Holdsclaw didn't know until two months ago that her granddaughter would play professional basketball this summer, so informed by a co-worker at Jamaica Hospital, where June Holdsclaw has been a medical records clerk for 10 years. She thought the WNBA draft was next year, and that her granddaughter would be home this summer.
