Holdsclaw honed her game on the courts near her grandmother's
apartment, playing against boys for as many as six hours daily. But
Chamique's trophies are no more prominently displayed in the apartment
than photos of June Holdsclaw's other three grandchildren. Apartment
1-D is not a shrine to Chamique's achievements; it merely gave birth to
them. June Holdsclaw didn't know until two months ago that her
granddaughter would play professional basketball this summer, so
informed by a co-worker at Jamaica Hospital, where June Holdsclaw has
been a medical records clerk for 10 years. She thought the WNBA draft
was next year, and that her granddaughter would be home this summer.
