KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Just hours after being honored as the nation's top
amateur athlete, Chamique Holdsclaw scored 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead
No. 1 Tennessee to a 89-53 victory over Vanderbilt on Thursday night.
Earlier in the day, Holdsclaw became the first female basketball player to
receive the prestigious Sullivan Award.
Holdsclaw scored 13 of the Lady Vols' first 22 points and had 20 by halftime
as Tennessee (25-1, 13-0 Southeastern Conference) cruised past intrastate rival
Vanderbilt (13-12, 6-7).
In the audience for Holdsclaw's final regular-season home game were her
family and friends, including track and field legend Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
Vanderbilt went seven minutes without a hitting a shot, until Jennifer
Holmes' lay-up made the score 32-14 with 7:39 left in the half.
But Holdsclaw countered with a 3-pointer that began a 13-5 Lady Vols run
that gave them a 45-19 halftime lead.
